Green chemistry

Towards a more sustainable chemical industry

When

From: 13-January-2022 15:00 CET To: 13-January-2022 16:00 CET

This webinar is one of a series of webinars focusing on the chemical industry.
This webinar has two parts and will be held for 60 minutes.

Part 1 - The plastics recycling angle

Today, globally the vast majority of plastic waste is either sent to landfills or incinerated. However, shifting consumer attitude and awareness towards plastic waste has driven governments and policymakers to introduce numerous regulations to address plastic and packaging waste with brand owners pledging to increase recycled content in their goods. Especially in Europe, the demand for better quality recycled plastics is increasing fast, creating a supply-demand imbalance and pushing prices higher. Many initiatives are underway to close the loop on plastic waste including widespread, improved collection systems and developing alternative technologies such as chemical recycling to support where mechanical recycling falls short.

AFRY’s webinar aims to provide the audience with a holistic view of the current status of plastics recycling in Europe, challenges that lie ahead to meet the European Commission’s mandatory recycling targets, and prevailing trends to address these challenges.

Part 2 - The biorefining angle

Chemicals are an inseparable part of our lives as they represent the building blocks of the goods we use daily. However, chemical pollution impacts human health and contributes to the degradation of ecosystems and biodiversity loss, while the chemical industry contributes to climate change. The European Chemical Industry plays a leading role in promoting high safety and sustainability standards, supported by a stringent regulatory framework that is becoming a model for safety and sustainability standards worldwide. Major trends in the industry include moving towards safe and sustainable-by-design chemicals, improving material and energy efficiency, utilizing low-carbon energy, increasing renewable content, and enhancing the biodegradability of chemicals that inevitability ends up in the environment.

AFRY’s webinar aims to provide the audience with a comprehensive overview of the trends surrounding the green transition of the chemical industry, with a particular focus on how biorefining can help the chemicals industry respond to these trends.
