Emosson Dam

At 180 m high with a crest length of 554 m it forms one of the largest reservoirs in Switzerland with a volume of 227 million m3 and is the cornerstone of a major hydroelectric complex straddling Switzerland and France.

Construction began in July 1967, the first concreting took place in September 1969, and construction was completed in August 1973.

Vieux Emosson Dam

It is a single-curvature arch-gravity dam 55 m high with a concrete volume of 62,000 m3. The effective volume of the reservoir was 11.2 million m3.

The dam was raised between 2012 and 2018, transforming it into a double-curvature arch dam. The height of the dam has risen to 76.5 m and the volume of concrete to 110,000 m3.

Göscheneralp Dam

It is still one of the largest dams in Europe (height: 155 m, length of crest: 540 m, volume of the dam: 9.3 million m3 and volume of the reservoir: 76 million m3). It is made of earth and rockfill quarried in the valley itself. It is watertight thanks to a vertical central moraine core, to which 10% of clay has been added.
