AFRY Supports Microsoft's Landmark Carbon Removal Agreement with CO280
AFRY is proud to have supported Microsoft in their landmark offtake agreement with CO280, a leading developer of large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects, to purchase ~3.7Mt of high-quality carbon removal over a 12-year term from a bioenergy carbon capture & storage ("BECCS") facility on the US Gulf Coast. This deal sets in motion one of the largest engineered carbon removal projects in the United States.
We are grateful to Microsoft for their leadership and commitment to advancing innovative climate solutions. This agreement leverages existing pulp and paper mills to capture biogenic CO2, providing a scalable and efficient solution for carbon removal. By retrofitting these mills, the project not only advances critical climate goals but also stimulates local economies and creates jobs in timberland communities.
We also extend our gratitude to CO280 for their collaboration and expertise in developing this groundbreaking project. The use of sustainable biomass and proximity to CO2 storage sites further enhances the project's environmental and economic benefits.
AFRY's involvement underscores our commitment to helping Microsoft deliver on its ambitions to drive the scale-up of high-quality carbon removal projects globally. By carrying out our in-depth due diligence we help mitigate some of the risks that come with establishing a new industry.
This agreement highlights the potential for large-scale carbon removal projects to make a significant contribution to the transition to net zero whilst simultaneously fostering economic growth. AFRY is honored to contribute to this initiative and looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing innovative climate solutions.
