Track 4A CCGT power plant at water's edge

AFRY as trusted engineering partner for “2021 Plant of the Year”

Track 4A, the world’s first 9HA.02 gas turbine combined cycle power plant in operation, was awarded “2021 Plant of the Year” by renowned POWER magazine. AFRY contributed to the project as the Owner’s Engineer.

Track 4A is a 1,440 MW combined cycle power plant located in Pasir Gudang, Johor Province, Malaysia. The project owners are Tenaga Nasional Berhad (“TNB”) and SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd (“SIPP Energy”), who have set up a special purpose company, Southern Power Generation Sdn Bhd (“SPG”) for the project.

It constitutes the first power plant globally using a gas turbine of GE 9HA.02 type, state-of-the-art technology with natural gas as the main fuel and distillate as the backup fuel. As a result, Track 4A provides the country with reliable and flexible electricity generation and stabilises the national grid.

The Malaysian Government has set ambitious targets for the country’s energy development to tackle climate change over the next two decades. Track 4A is part of a broader plan to ensure the highest efficiency of power generation and foster energy integration from renewable sources.

AFRY was engaged as the Owner’s Engineer for the project by SPG in 2017 to provide a detailed engineering review, construction supervision, quality assurance and commissioning services. The power plant was built and commissioned with 10 million man-hours and zero lost-time injuries (LTI), and AFRY will continue providing its services during the warranty period.

AFRY supported SPG during the project development deploying a wide array of expertise that span innovative and cutting-edge technologies, such as the world's first 9HA.02 gas turbine. Despite challenging times due to the pandemic and the consequent travel restrictions, the power plant fully entered into commercial operation in February 2021.

We are proud to have contributed to this pilot project and supervised the start-up of operations of the world’s first 9HA.02 gas turbine-based power plant”, says Petteri Härkki, Regional Director of AFRY. “We congratulate SPG on this prestigious award. We look forward to continuing to support SPG and the country by providing sustainable solutions and advice to ensure a resilient energy supply that can accelerate the country's energy transition.
