Groundbreaking study on climate change adaptation for the island of Ischia in Italy
During the last year, AFRY supported the European Investment Bank (EIB) by contributing to a comprehensive climate change adaptation report for the island of Ischia. This report provides guidance on climate-resilient reconstruction after devastating earthquake and landslide events in recent years.
The study, commissioned by the EIB, analyses future climate risk for all relevant economic sectors on the Italian island and compiles recommendations for climate adaptation measures for post-disaster reconstruction. Summarising the study, the EIB states:
As a result of intensive field analysis and having consulted a wide range of data, information and scientific studies provided by other bodies, the EIB report provides a clear view of the environmental challenges and future climate risks, proposing innovative and resilient solutions to tackle these.
AFRY coordinated the study and contributed with climate change impact analyses for landslide and flood risks, as well as risk assessments in the fields of transport, buildings and tourism. Further contributions were provided by esteemed partners from science, engineering and consulting, including CMCC, Willis Tower Watson, Adelphi, and 4C.
The final report was presented at a press conference on 19 April 2024 in Ischia. The event was attended by EIB’s Vice-President, Gelsomina Vigliotti, the Government Commissioner for Ischia reconstruction, Giovanni Legnini, representatives of the Campania Region and the City of Naples, as well as the mayors of the island of Ischia. The Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, joined via video conference. Philipp Stanzel and Anssi Karppinen from AFRY participated in the conference as the project managers of the assignment.
The press event attracted significant attention and interest within Italy, highlighting innovative approaches to climate change adaptation and sustainability. It received coverage in prominent national newspapers such as La Repubblica and La Stampa.
