The future of roads and motorways of the Czech Republic
The future of roads and motorways of the Czech Republic
AFRY is assigned to improve the highway and road network in Czech Republic, and will be using a multimodal transport model to determine and conceptually design the optimal road corridors with regard to technical, ecological and economic aspects.
In 2020, the Directorate of Roads and Motorways of the Czech Republic announced a public tender for the contract "Possibilities and opportunities for the development of the motorway and road network of the Czech Republic". The contract competed using the Best Value method - the first contract competed in this way. This is one of the largest conceptual works that have been announced and processed so far for the contracting authority.
A total of seven different associations entered the competition, which included a total of 11 design companies. In accordance with the principles of Best Value, it was a three-round selection of the order processor - submission of an offer, an interview with the future project manager of the order and a call for cooperation.
The consortium of AFRY and PRAGOPROJEKT - "The Future of Roads and Motorways of the Czech Republic AFRY - PGP" was invited in February 2021 as the most successful bidder for the third round to cooperate and document the offered qualification, and in June this year a contract was concluded and work started.
AFRYs role
AFRY is the head of the contract consortium, responsible for contract management, work coordination and processing of the multimodal transport model. The project will work to reach three main project goals:
- Significantly increase the quality of tangential road connections within the Czech Republic, with emphasis on the connection of regions and cities
- Reduce the traffic load of congested nodes of large agglomerations (Prague, Brno)
- Offer alternatives to the main long-distance routes (bypass or backup routes, etc.), or supplement the missing or improve existing cross-border connections.
A multimodal transport model will be used to process the order, which will serve as a tool for finding road corridors with the greatest attractiveness of transport relations within the Czech Republic, but also cross-border relations. The solution will be divided for individual partial logical directions with a focus on the interconnection of regional cities, ev. significant agglomerations.
The aim will be to determine and conceptually design the optimal road corridors with regard to technical, ecological and economic aspects. The work is divided into three consecutive logical units - analytical, design and evaluation phase. The elaboration of the work will also include discussions with the investor and working meetings with the general professional public.
The work started in June 2021, and will be processed for 16 months, with planned completion in November 2022. Hence, the aim of the contract is to re-evaluate, supplement and recommend the planned routes of roads and highways in a national concept.
