AFRY Celebrates Milestone in Austria’s Energy Transition
Today marks the official opening of the Limberg III pumped storage power plant in Kaprun, Austria - one of the most significant energy infrastructure projects in the region. AFRY is proud to have contributed to this landmark development as the local site supervision partner for VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH.
Since construction began in 2021, AFRY has provided technical and commercial site supervision, geological documentation and consulting, and natural hazard analysis for both above- and below-ground works. The project involved complex tunneling and cavern construction, including a 558-meter pressure shaft, 5.1 kilometers of drift waterway tunnels in summary, and a machine cavern located 450 meters underground.
With a total installed capacity of 480 MW and a partial converter, Limberg III is designed to respond flexibly to grid demands, storing and releasing energy during peak periods. It uses existing reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden without requiring new surface storage, making it a model of sustainable engineering.
I’m incredibly proud of our team’s dedication and precision throughout this project, from the first geological surveys to the final inspections. Their expertise and commitment have been instrumental in delivering such a complex and forward-looking facility. I also want to sincerely thank our client, VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH, for the trust they placed in AFRY.
Ernst Zeller, Head of Hydro at AFRY.
The opening of Limberg III is not only a technical achievement but also a symbol of Austria’s commitment to a resilient and renewable energy future.
