Red Dot design award for electric bike
Engineering and design in harmony when Cycleurope, in partnership with AFRY, develops electric bicycle together with Crescent
The Red Dot Award is an international award given annually for good design. For their development of the Crescent Elmer electric bicycle, AFRY and Cycleurope now win a Red Dot in the category product design.
Crescent Elmer is a new type of family bike that helps solve the puzzles of daily life. With a design that focuses on a high capacity for carrying accessories, it combines the best features of both a city bike and a cargo bike. The design has won the international quality seal Red Dot, which is distributed at the gala in June this year.
“We wanted to create a bicycle that the user would want to use instead of the car. The ambition was to create something unique with a strong focus on user experience and sustainability. If more people exchange car trips for bike trips, we can contribute to the green transition,” says Fredrik Palmblad, Product Design Team Lead, AFRY Experience Studios.
One of the main challenges with the design work was to integrate the battery into the frame and create an exceptionally large rear carrier – without making the bike as a whole look extraordinary. The result was an electric bicycle in a clean, Scandinavian design that can connect to five accessories, including a child seat.
“We are very happy about the award. It is an acknowledgement that with our teamwork and a wide field of design expertise, we can create something that has both exceptional design and high user value, says Marijn Molenaar, Design Project Lead, AFRY Experience Studios.
