ÅF and Volvo Cars deliver smart transport solution to Swedish Transport Administration

Thu, 27/09/2018 - 08:00 CEST

A new digital solution from ÅF and Volvo Cars will enable the Swedish Transport Administration to better study road conditions. The goal is to contribute to reducing skidding and accidents on Swedish roads.

The Swedish Transport Administration continuously measures and analyses conditions on the country's roads; however, current measurement methods present geographical and temporal challenges. By processing data from Volvo vehicles, ÅF will provide the Swedish Transport Administration with highly reliable data on road conditions. The Administration will then be able to act quickly and strategically to minimise the period that road surfaces are slippery in cold weather.

"We are delighted to be able to deliver this solution to the Swedish Transport Administration in collaboration with Volvo Cars. New technologies that make large amounts of data available open the way for new solutions and new collaborations. This is a prime example of ÅF’s digitalisation work in the infrastructure sector,” says Mats Påhlsson, EVP and Head of Infrastructure Division ÅF.

Road conditions will be visualised on maps and diagrams and delivered via a web-based interface. The project will continue for two years after which it will be evaluated. The first deliveries to the Swedish Transport Administration will take place before the end of 2018.

All Volvo cars in Sweden fitted with Slippery Road Alert anti-skid technology will be involved in the collection of data. All data shared with the Swedish Transport Administration will be pseudonymised.

"Volvo Cars is constantly working to increase safety for all road users, not only those who drive a Volvo," says Eva Lahti, director of Driver Assistance & Safety, Volvo Car Corporation.
