ÅF to assist National Property Board of Sweden in solar cell effort
The National Property Board of Sweden has been tasked by the Swedish government to increase the use of solar cells. ÅF is to, on the behalf of the National Property Board, carry out an inventory of possible locations for solar cells on a number of properties, including Varberg Fortress and Drottningholm Palace.

The government’s assignment to the National Property Board of Sweden is about increasing the use of solar cells at properties which are unable to carry their own financial costs in the long term. Therefore, it has been decided that these should receive a grant from the government. There are about 150 properties under the administration of the National Property Board.
ÅF to contribute with renewable energy
The aim of the solar cell effort is to contribute with renewable energy and to develop and find opportunities in unusual environments, particularly those of significant cultural and historical value. At the request of the National Property Board, ÅF is now mapping possible locations for solar cells among the above-mentioned properties financed through government grants.

The work has already begun at some of the properties, among them Sweden’s south easternmost group of islands, Utklippan, close to Karlskrona. The group of islands received electricity in the 1940s and it is expected that the electric cable connecting them to the mainland won’t work for much longer. Therefore, ÅF is considering the possibility of a local self-sufficient energy system. The same challenge is also facing a number of islands on the West Coast, among them Pater Nosterskären, Väderöarna and Nidingen, where ÅF is also carrying out an inventory.
Other properties included in the project are, among others, Karlsten Fortress on the island of Marstrand, Varberg Fortress and Drottningholm Palace. The National Property Board of Sweden and ÅF have signed a framework agreement which will last for two years, with a possible extension. There are a number of solar cells already in place at some of the National Property Board’s properties, among them the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi, India, which ÅF has previously inspected.
