Information

ÅF has signed a framework agreement with ESS AB (European Spallation Source) in
Lund, Sweden. ESS is a European project involving 17 partner countries. The aim
is to build the world's foremost neutron source for materials science research
in Lund.

Following an extensive procurement process, ÅF is one of the technical
consulting companies that ESS has chosen to sign a framework agreement with.
ÅF's track record of experience from major projects in the specialist areas of
industry, infrastructure, environment, nuclear power, mechanical engineering and
IT was a contributory factor towards its success in securing the framework
agreement.

ÅF has been involved in the project intermittently since 2003, chiefly as a
partner in the application process preceding the EU's decision to locate this
facility in Lund, despite competition from Bilbao (Spain) and Debrecen
(Hungary).

Construction work on the ESS project is scheduled to start in 2013. The facility
is expected to open in 2019 and should become fully operational by 2025. ESS
will be used by between 2,000 and 3,000 European researchers every year.

As a multidisciplinary scientific research facility in Lund based on the world's
most powerful neutron source, ESS will open up new fields of opportunity for
researchers, particularly those working in health science, environmental
science, energy, climate, transport and engineering. ESS is a European research
project. At least 17 nations will be involved in cooperating on the design,
financing, construction and operation of the facility.
