ÅF has been commissioned by the World Bank to carry out a study of the Mangdechhu hydropower project from an environmental and sustainability perspective. The assignment will begin in October 2015 and the results will be presented to the World Bank and the Bhutanese authorities during the first half of 2016.

The work will be conducted in accordance with the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, which is an international tool used for assessing sustainability in hydropower projects, covering technical, economic, environmental and social aspects. The Protocol also considers issues such as climate change and human rights. There are only eleven people accredited to use the protocol in the world, out of which two work for ÅF

The Mangdechhu project is currently under construction and is expected to be commissioned in 2018. It will have an installed capacity of 720 megawatts.
