AFRY and IDIEM to deliver study to reduce flood risk in Macul Ravine
Commissioned by Chile’s Ministry of Public Works, AFRY and IDIEM, a research institute at the University of Chile, are leading a study to reduce flood risk in the Macul Ravine in Santiago. The project combines nature-based solutions (NbS) and climate analysis to protect communities and create a model for other vulnerable areas.

The project combines nature-based solutions (NbS) and climate analysis to protect communities and create a model for other vulnerable areas.
The Macul Ravine in Santiago has long been exposed to severe floods and extreme weather. To improve safety, AFRY and IDIEM are developing a plan that includes flexible barriers and ecological measures such as planting native species to stabilize slopes. Climate projections and field surveys – covering topographic, social, and structural aspects – are central to the project, ensuring solutions are sustainable and proactive.
AFRY contributes with global expertise in engineering and planning, while IDIEM adds technical knowledge in soil and structural analysis. This partnership demonstrates how private and public sectors can collaborate to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to meet climate challenges.
