AFRY and Tyréns awarded detailed design assignments for the East Link
The assignment assigned to AFRY and Tyréns includes the tender documents for the Gerstaberg – Långsjön railway line in Södertälje. Detailed designing is expected to begin in March 2022 and the entire assignment is expected to be completed in November 2023. The route is part of the East Link Project, a new double-track railway between Stockholm – Linköping, and the first part of Sweden's new main railways for high-speed railways.

Detailed designing is expected to begin in March 2022 and the entire assignment is expected to be completed in November 2023. The route is part of the East Link Project, a new double-track railway between Stockholm – Linköping, and the first part of Sweden's new main railways for high-speed railways.
The Route Gerstaberg – Långsjön in Södertälje is part of the East Link, which at full expansion will be able to be operated by passenger trains with speeds up to 250 km/h as well as by fast regional trains.
The assignment includes the preparation of tender documents, specifications as well as construction site monitoring. The detailed design assignment is expected to last for two years.
The assignment involves the detailed design of, among other things, a fly-over bridge over the existing main line including ramps, new road bridge, demolition of existing bridge, temporary and permanent railway works. Existing railway facilities affected are Grödingebanan and Västra stambanan at Gerstaberg where the East Link connects.
“We are incredibly pleased that we at AFRY, together with our partner Tyréns, have been given the confidence to continue contributing in the East Link and to Sweden's investment in high-speed rail. It is an exciting project with many technical areas and specialist competences involved and it is fantastic to be involved in building the transport infrastructure of the future”, says Folke Sandberg, VP and Head of Business Area Transportation Sweden at AFRY.
The East Link will increase the capacity and reliability of the entire railway system and enable regional expansion through shorter journey times. Existing railway lines will be retained and leased mainly for freight traffic and regional commuter rail services. The East Link covers a distance of approximately 160 km and is planned to be completed in 2035.
"We are very pleased to be working together with AFRY to expand the Swedish railway system with new mainlines. Gerstaberg is the first section that is now taking the step towards the start of construction when we will develop specifications for three different contracts. We are excited and ready to start," says Camilla Engel, Business Manager Road and Rail East at Tyréns.
