AFRY awarded contract for Tram-Treno tunnel in Switzerland

Fri, 04/04/2025 - 09:00 CEST

AFRY, as part of the Tram Ticino consortium, has been awarded the contract to plan the Breganzona tunnel by Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese SA (RTTL). The transport infrastructure will make an important contribution to the local public transport network.

The new Tram-Treno network in Lugano connects the Lugano city center with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys. Public transport is reducing travel time and is therefore becoming an increasingly attractive and more sustainable means of transport. The redesign of the network is expected to increase capacity from 7,500 passengers per day today to 20,000 in the future.

The Tram Ticino consortium, consisting of AFRY, Pini and Lombardi, has been awarded the contract for the planning of the tunnel at Breganzona and the associated construction work.

‘We are pleased to be able to use our expertise to bring this complex inner-city project from the planning stage to life, thus contributing to a sustainable transport solution’, says Marcel Winter, Country Manager of AFRY in Switzerland.

The underground station Lugano - Railway Station SBB, located 40 meters below the new underpass, will serve as an intermodal hub for trams, trains, the railway network and city buses, connecting the new network with regional and national transport.

The aim is to put the first phase of the Tram-Treno network into operation by 2035. AFRY’s assignment spans the next ten years, with an estimated order value of SEK 120 million.
