AFRY awarded design contract in MVM Paks Nuclear power plant in Hungary

Tue, 21/01/2025 - 08:30 CET

AFRY has been awarded a key design contract by MVM NUKA for the reconstruction of control circuits at the Hungarian MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). This project is part of the plant’s lifetime extension programme, ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of one of Hungary's most critical energy facilities.

MVM NUKA Ltd., the Hungarian EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contractor, is managing the project on behalf of MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Ltd. The reconstruction project aims to further ensure the reliable and efficient operation of the plant.

AFRY will be responsible for the detailed design of nearly 700 control circuits, including instrumentation & control and electrical systems, while excluding reactor and turbine islands. The work will comply with the requirements, design specifications, and safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, and the Paks Nuclear Power Plant itself.

József Dénes, Head of Nuclear and Managing Director of AFRY in Hungary, commented: “We are proud to continue our successful collaboration with MVM NUKA and MVM Paks NPP. This contract reinforces our ability to deliver complex and high-stakes projects in the nuclear sector, further solidifying our role in supporting the reliable and safe operation of Hungary’s energy infrastructure.”

Paks NPP, which generates nearly 40% of Hungary’s electricity, plays a crucial role in the country's commitment to reducing CO2 emissions, currently providing clean energy to approximately 1.5 million households. AFRY’s involvement in this project aligns with its commitment to driving a secure and efficient energy transition.
