AFRY awarded detailed design assignment for the renovation of the Liljeholmen Bridges in Stockholm
AFRY has been commissioned by the Stockholm Traffic Office to carry out the detailed design of major renovation works on the Liljeholmen Bridges. The project is an important step in ensuring the long-term functionality of the bridges for public transport, pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and maritime traffic.

The Liljeholmen Bridges form a vital connection between the districts Södermalm and Liljeholmen in Stockholm. It consists of two parallel bridges with a total length of approximately 375 meters. The western bridge was inaugurated in 1928 and the eastern bridge in 1954. Both bridges require extensive maintenance and renovation measures to ensure their continued safe and efficient operation.
The western bridge will undergo a major renovation aimed at extending its technical service life by at least 60 years. The project includes the replacement of the movable bridge span, measures to increase the bridge's load-bearing capacity, and repairs to both steel and concrete structures. The objective is to improve accessibility and safety for all users while preserving the bridge's cultural heritage values.
AFRY has been involved in the project since spring 2024 and completed the preliminary design phase in December 2025. The work has been carried out in close collaboration across several areas of expertise and further developed in preparation for the detailed design phase, with a focus on, among other things, construction-phase solutions, cycling infrastructure, structural design, and architectural considerations related to the cultural environment.

The detailed design phase will result in tender documentation for the upcoming construction contract, and the project is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2027.
