AFRY awarded Owner’s Engineer role for Lötschberg Base Tunnel expansion
AFRY, as part of the engineering consortium IG AI, has been entrusted with quality assurance of the railway engineering equipment for the full expansion of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel in Switzerland.

The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is part of the 40-kilometer Lötschberg Base Line between Frutigen and Raron. Under the Swiss Rail Expansion 2035 program, the line will be upgraded to double track. Together with the Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels, it forms the backbone of the New Railway Link through the Alps (NEAT), increasing capacity and supporting the shift of freight from road to rail.
AFRY, together with its partner, will be responsible as Owner’s Engineer for the quality assurance of all railway engineering equipment throughout the expansion project. The work includes reviews of planning, technical assessments, and oversight of commissioning, ensuring that the project’s capacity and safety targets are met.

The contract value for IG AI amounts to approximately 118 MSEK, of which about 38 MSEK is allocated to AFRY. The project will run from October 2025 to December 2035.
