AFRY to coordinate technical systems design of Korsvägen station – a part of the Swedish West Link

Tue, 06/10/2020 - 09:00 CEST

The West Link is a railway located beneath central Gothenburg, in western Sweden, that will provide the city with a rail line for commuter and regional trains. The consortium West Link Contractors (WLC) will build the Korsvägen section on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration. AFRY has been enlisted by WLC to carry out technical systems design of the Korsvägen station, project E05.

The West Link will be a double track railway for commuter and regional trains in a tunnel beneath central Gothenburg. It will be about eight kilometers long, including a six kilometer tunnel. The West Link also includes three underground stations; at Gothenburg Central Station, Haga and Korsvägen. The trains will be more frequent, travel times will be shorter and passengers will be able to reach more locations without having to change means of transport.

AFRY has been entrusted by WLC to carry out technical systems design and deliver technical documentation for HVAC, water and sewage, electricity/telecommunications, control systems and monitoring. Work began in September and is estimated to be complete in the autumn of 2021. About 35 consultants will be involved in the project from AFRY’s side.

Korsvägen is an important hub in Gothenburg's public transport network. The Korsvägen station will be built underground with three entrances, an intermediate floor, two platforms and four railway tracks. A garage for bikes will be built on the intermediate floor, and there will also be spaces set aside for shops.

“I am very pleased that we’ve been entrusted with the coordination of all these technical fields. The West Link will make it easier to travel by public transport and contribute to the overall urban development of Gothenburg. We are proud to contribute to sustainable travel in Gothenburg,” says Anders Nilsson, Project Manager for the Korsvägen station at AFRY.

The West Link is estimated to be ready for traffic in 2026.
