AFRY to design major district heating pipeline from Dukovany nuclear power plant to Brno, Czechia

AFRY has been selected by Teplárny Brno, a Czech energy utility, to provide key engineering and design services for a major district heating project in Czechia. The project is an important initiative to provide CO₂-free heat supply for more than 110,000 households and is expected to cover about 50% of the region’s thermal energy demand.

The project will connect the Dukovany nuclear power plant to the city of Brno, creating a sustainable, CO2-free heating source for the city and four other municipalities connected along the route.

AFRY will contribute to the project with comprehensive engineering and design services, including creating documentation for the building permit and contractor tendering, managing the permitting process as well as providing detailed design plans and site supervision during the implementation phase.

The goal is to invest in future-proof energy infrastructure by replacing existing natural gas and biomass heat sources with clean energy from the Dukovany nuclear power plant. This will be achieved by constructing a 42-kilometer long hot water pipeline that will transfer heat from the plant directly to Brno's district heating network. The pipeline will supply about 50% of the thermal energy demand in the region.

“Our mission is to provide Brno with a stable and affordable heat supply built on clean, future-proof technologies. The Dukovany–Brno pipeline will become one of the cornerstones of a new energy ecosystem that serves not only today’s customers but also generations to come. Partnering with AFRY provides a strong foundation and expertise to make this vision a reality,” said Petr Fajmon, CEO of Teplárny Brno, a.s.

“We look forward to bringing our expertise to this significant project that advances clean and stable energy solutions in the region. It is perfectly aligned with our commitment to drive the energy transition, and we are excited to work together with Teplárny Brno to make this a reality,” said József Dénes, Head of Segment Nuclear at AFRY.

The design work is scheduled for completion by August 2028. The value of the contract is approximately 160 MSEK.
