AFRY has been entrusted by the Swedish Transport Administration to design track renewal and catenary upgrades on the Western Main Line – one of Sweden’s most vital railway arteries connecting Stockholm and Gothenburg.
The Western Main Line connects Stockholm and Gothenburg and carries both passenger and freight traffic. AFRY’s assignment includes comprehensive upgrades to tracks and catenary systems between Katrineholm and Hallsberg, one of the most critical links in the Swedish rail network, where hundreds of trains pass each day.
The project includes track renewal between Baggetorp and Pålsboda, along with a major modernization of the catenary system between Hallsberg and Sköldinge. The measures aim to handle increasing traffic volumes, improve punctuality, and strengthen the long-term reliability of the infrastructure.
AFRY’s assignment covers the full design lifecycle: from preparing tender documentation and construction designs to managing regulatory applications and asset data. The work will be carried out in several phases, with design deliveries scheduled for 2027-2028 and full project completion expected by 2032.
“We are proud to contribute to future-proofing the Western Main Line. By increasing capacity on one of the busiest sections of the Swedish rail network, we contribute to more reliable transport for both passengers and freight”, says Folke Sandberg, Head of Road & Rail Sweden at AFRY.
The contract value for AFRY is estimated at 50–100 MSEK from 2025 until 2032.
