AFRY to provide basic engineering services to Helen’s new heat pump plant utilising sea water in Finland

Mon, 10/10/2022 - 13:00 CEST

AFRY has received an assignment from Helen, one of the largest energy utilities in Finland, for basic engineering services for Helen’s new heat pump plant in Helsinki.

The plant would utilise sea water for district heating with a capacity of almost 500 MW and for district cooling with a capacity of 40 MW.  If implemented, it would play an important role in providing district heating in Helsinki in the future, as well as in helping Helen to achieve its target of being carbon neutral by 2030.

AFRY’s assignment will cover the development of the basic technology concept and main technical parameters for the underground heat pump plant, located in a rock cavern about 65 meters below the sea level, as well as preparing the project for detailed engineering and further execution. In addition, based on the basic design AFRY will define an investment cost estimate to support Helen in their final investment decision.

“To be able to achieve the targets of this extensive and technically complex project, we need to have the best possible partners to work with and to find the best execution practices. We are confident that with its resources and competences AFRY is well positioned to achieve the demanding engineering targets,” said Jaakko Tiittanen, Head of Project Management at Helen.

“Our heat pump plant utilising sea water would play a key role in providing district heating in Helsinki after this decade. We believe heat pumps utilising heat from the environment, and excess heat, are at the core of the transition towards a decentralised energy system, which produces carbon-free energy from the ground, air, water and waste heat. They are also key in achieving our ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030,” he continued.

“We are delighted to support Helen in their journey to be carbon neutral by 2030. With our deep expertise in district heating and cooling as well as understanding of state-of-the-art technologies and innovation, we will help Helen in their ambition to produce the best and most efficient city energy in the world,” said Ilkka Heikkilä, Regional Director, Renewable and thermal energy, AFRY.

The assignment is expected to be completed in spring 2024 after which Helen will make the final investment decision.
