AFRY is Redelfi’s key partner in developing Battery Energy Storage Systems in Italy

Redelfi has awarded AFRY technical advisory services to develop a portfolio of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across Italy. This project will enable renewable energy to become predictable by storing excess energy for later use, thus accelerating the country’s energy transition.

Redelfi, a private Italian company specialising in the development of sustainable and innovative infrastructure for energy and digital transformation, has initiated a significant BESS project in Northern Italy. This initiative consists of 8 projects and will collectively reach a total installed capacity of approximately 1.43 GW.

The battery systems will store energy from renewables for 8 hours, making clean energy available in a predictable manner. This will contribute to maintaining grid stability and reducing dependence on conventional power plants.

AFRY’s role is to support Redelfi with project management, basic design, and the authorisation process to ensure these projects comply with local requirements and international standards, achieving the ready-to-build stage in a reasonably limited time period.

Davide Sommariva, President of Redelfi Group, commented on the partnership with AFRY: “Battery systems are the key to unlocking the potential of renewables in Italy and enabling a rapid transition and increased deployment of clean energy. Thanks to AFRY's comprehensive expertise in both energy storage and the broader power landscape, it is the ideal partner for us to successfully develop our BESS projects and achieve our sustainability goals”.

“We are proud of our longstanding partnership with Redelfi, built on trust and cooperation. Our extensive experience in BESS projects will be instrumental in securing the necessary permits and advancing to the construction phase. We hope that our services will not only add significant value to Redelfi but also foster a more sustainable energy system in Italy", says Alessio Giuffra, Managing Director, AFRY Italy.
