AFRY strengthens its position in the energy sector with key role in Norwegian grid infrastructure project

AFRY has been awarded a central role as client representative and project management partner in the execution of a new transformer substation at Onarheim in Western Norway. The assignment is carried out on behalf of Statnett and involves leading a major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening power system reliability and enabling further electrification and industrial development.

The new substation will be constructed in connection with existing infrastructure near Husnes and will be developed as a modern 420/300/132 kV facility. The project will contribute to increased capacity, improved operational reliability, and greater flexibility in the power system.

“This is a complex project where we take on a comprehensive responsibility for execution. Leading execution on behalf of Statnett

Following the successful completion of the planning phase, Statnett has exercised the option for the next phase of the project, confirming AFRY’s role in the execution stage.

As client representative and project management partner, AFRY will lead the overall project execution on behalf of Statnett. The assignment includes overall project management, control of schedule, cost, quality and risk, supervision of civil works and electro-mechanical contracts, and coordination of contractors and key stakeholders.

AFRY will also fulfil the client representative function on site, ensuring that construction is carried out in accordance with contracts, regulatory approvals and technical requirements.

“Our role is to ensure a structured and safe execution while managing complex interfaces between contractors and stakeholders,” adds Persson.

The project involves a number of stakeholders, including industrial partners, regional grid companies, and local authorities.

Supporting future power demand and electrification

The development of the new substation forms part of the ongoing strengthening of Norway’s power system to meet growing electricity demand driven by industrial development and electrification.

AFRY’s role as client representative is key to ensuring efficient and predictable project delivery, with a strong focus on quality and safety throughout all phases.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2026, with commissioning planned for 2029.

The contract has a value of approximately NOK 93 million for AFRY.
