Nexans, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of cable systems and services, specialising in the offshore wind market and subsea interconnectors, has engaged AFRY to provide consulting support in the Gotland Connection project for Svenska Kraftnät. The project aims to meet the growing electricity demand on Gotland.
The Swedish transmission system operator (TSO), Svenska Kraftnät, is expanding the national grid to Gotland with two new 220kV HVAC cables to meet the demands of the island’s growing need for electricity supply, driven by industrial growth and renewable energy projects on the island.
Nexans, a global leader in electrification, is responsible for the delivery of 320 km of high-voltage subsea and onshore cables and AFRY will contribute with expert advice to support quality, safety, and regulatory compliance throughout the project.
AFRY has been appointed advisory partner to Nexans who manufactures the cables. The assignment also includes support to ensure compliance with the requirements of Svenska Kraftnät, as well as Swedish laws and regulations.
“It is great to collaborate with Nexans on this significant project. By contributing our expertise in high-voltage cable systems, AFRY supports the development of a sustainable and reliable energy supply for Gotland, while also helping to meet Sweden’s growing energy needs,” says Fredrik Persson, Global Head of Transmission & Distribution at AFRY.
The project is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2030.
We are 18,000 devoted experts in industry, energy and infrastructure sectors, creating impact for generations to come. AFRY has Nordic roots with a global reach, net sales of 27 BSEK and is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm.
