Liquid Wind selects AFRY as engineering partner for second electrofuel facility in Sweden

Tue, 17/01/2023 - 11:53 CET

The Swedish electrofuel developer Liquid Wind has selected AFRY to provide basic engineering for the balance of plant for its second electrofuel facility in Sweden – FlagshipTWO in Sundsvall. Liquid Wind’s ambition, together with Sundsvall Energi, is to develop a 100,000-ton electrofuel facility.

Liquid Wind develops replicable facilities to produce green electrofuel. The first project, FlagshipONE (acquired by Ørsted in December 2022) in Örnsköldsvik, is Europe’s first FID’d commercial-scale green electrofuel facility. The next plant will be built in Sundsvall and three more plants are planned for the Nordic Region. FlagshipONE in Örnsköldsvik and FlagshipTWO in Sundsvall will together produce over 150 000 tons of green electrofuel per year and reduce the annual CO2 emissions from international shipping by 200 000 tons.

The need for CO2-neutral marine fuels is a significant 300M tons, and 99.9 percent of the fuel used by marine shipping today is based on fossilised raw materials. Liquid Wind wants to enable the transformation of the shipping industry by converting renewable electricity and biogenic CO2 into green electrofuel. AFRY, together with several other world-leading players in green technology, such as Siemens Energy, Topsoe, Carbon Clean and Alfa Laval, are now collaborating with Liquid Wind to establish several facilities capable of producing green marine fuel.

AFRYhas been engaged as the engineering consultant in FlagshipTWO to perform basic engineering for the balance of plant and integration with the local energy company Sundsvall Energi. AFRY’s assignment also covers project management for the entire basic engineering of the FlagshipTWO project. In addition, AFRY prepares technical documentation for the environmental permit.

“International shipping is one of the industries that is most difficult to decarbonise. We are very proud to be part of this green transition project, which will result in a welcome change for the international shipping emissions as they shift from fossil to green electrofuel. We look forward to our cooperation with Liquid Wind in the FlagshipTWO project and to contribute to a more sustainable society”, says Lisa Vedin, Head of Business Area Process Industries Sweden, AFRY.

AFRYs assignment began in Q4 2022 and will be completed by the summer of 2023. Production is planned to start at the facility in Sundsvall at the end of 2025.

“We are very pleased that AFRY is now participating in the FlagshipTWO project in Sundsvall. It’s great to have a partner with Nordic roots and solid experience. FlagshipTWO will be an important milestone not only for Sundsvall and Liquid Wind but also for Sweden as potentially the leading producer of green electrofuel in Europe”, says Claes Fredriksson, CEO and founder of Liquid Wind.
