Porto Alegre Airport’s expansion project received “Award of Merit” in ENR Global Best Projects Awards

Mon, 10/08/2020 - 14:00 CEST

Pöyry, part of AFRY, acted as a design firm in the consortium and was responsible for the elaboration of the executive projects and technical monitoring.

The ENR Global Best Projects Awards focus on the challenges, risks and rewards of designing and constructing global projects. The award is to honour the global project teams behind outstanding design and construction efforts during the past year. Entries compete in 20 specialised categories, ranging from construction and design of airports to industrial facilities. An independent jury of industry leaders in design and construction will judge the projects using five criteria through a global perspective, including safety, innovation and teamwork. The 8th edition of the award was given to 30 projects, located in 21 different countries on six continents.

The Brazilian Porto Alegre Airport expansion project received the “Award of Merit” in the Airport/Port category of the ENR Global Best Project Awards. Organized by Engineering News-Record (ENR), the award highlights the best global construction projects, rewarding companies involved in overcoming challenges and reducing risks when designing and constructing with teams of different nationalities.

“The expansion of Porto Alegre Airport won the Honour to Merit Premium and was the only airport project that was awarded,” celebrates Fábio Bellotti da Fonseca, president of Pöyry in Brazil, observing that the project competed in the combined Airports/Ports category.

The Porto Alegre Airport expansion and modernization project, the largest and busiest airport in the southern region of Brazil, was a job full of engineering challenges, including aspects related to logistics, safety and environmental management. “The competence and synergy of the Fraport, HTBM and Pöyry teams provided for the installation of a world-class airport, as well as the rigorous realization within time and cost, and with the highest levels of health, safety and preservation of the environment,” highlights Fonseca.

The expansion is managed by Fraport Brasil—Porto Alegre, a subsidiary of AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide, which contracted HTBM consortium—formed by the HTB, TEDESCO and Barbosa Mello companies, for execution. Pöyry, part of AFRY, as subcontractor to the consortium, was responsible for the elaboration of the executive projects and technical monitoring.

The first stage of the project was completed in October 2019, without interference in the airport’s normal operations. It included the verification and consolidation of basic engineering, elaboration of detailed engineering, with the use of digital tools such as 3D BIM modelling, in addition to visual communication, landscaping, operational furniture and integration of public areas (landside) and restricted access (airside), including the expansion of the aircraft yard and operations in the runways’ headlands and taxiway areas.

“We are proud to have participated in this project together with HTBM and Fraport. The achievement of this award, disputed by companies from different parts of the world, means international recognition of Pöyry's ability to work together with our partners and to deliver sustainable solutions in projects and engineering,” says Fábio Bellotti da Fonseca, president of Pöyry Brazil.

“The success of this undertaking results from the perfect integration between the Fraport, Pöyry and HTB teams, which, through the highest quality management and the perfect operational synchronism, made it possible to comply with schedules and costs, with the efficiency and sustainability that companies and society demand from engineering projects today,” adds Detlef Drale, CEO of HTB.

“Delivering the tasks on time and with high quality is the result of the work carried out by a team of excellence. We are very pleased to offer a more modern, spacious airport, with international safety standards for our passengers and very honored with the award,” says Andreea Pal, CEO of Fraport Brasil.
