Transitioning away from fossil fuels: AFRY's Fossil Detox Report outlines how
The urgent need for a global shift from fossil fuels forms the foundation of AFRY’s newly published Fossil Detox Report. The report underlines the critical technologies and strategies required to accelerate the transition and mitigate the ongoing climate crisis.
The urgent need for a global shift from fossil fuels forms the foundation of AFRY’s newly published Fossil Detox Report. The report underlines the critical technologies and strategies required to accelerate the transition and mitigate the ongoing climate crisis.
AFRY launches this comprehensive report during New York Climate Week. The report dives into key sectors such as electricity grids, hydrogen, and storage technologies, and presents a roadmap for accelerating the climate transition.
"The Fossil Detox Report confirms that, though renewable technologies have grown at an unprecedented rate, we need to redouble our efforts to meet global recommended targets," says Jonas Gustavsson, President and CEO at AFRY, and continues: "Our projections suggest the average lifetime cost for wind and solar must fall by roughly 20% by 2030 to ensure competitiveness, especially for offshore wind."
The report asserts the importance of smart grids in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources, optimising energy use, reducing waste, and enhancing our energy systems' resilience. Furthermore, effective energy storage techniques and carbon capture and storage (CCS) are identified as critical components in this transition.
The Fossil Detox Report presents nine measures to accelerate this transition, including setting clear long-term emissions targets, enhancing sector-specific strategies, incentivising CO2-free technologies, optimising existing energy assets and innovating in hard-to-abate sectors.
"As we prepare for upcoming climate meetings, the international community must unite and recommit to creating a sustainable future. We at AFRY believe this transition is not merely a challenge but an opportunity for innovation, economic growth, and social equity. Together, we can build a cleaner and brighter future”, concludes Jonas Gustavsson.
