AFRY   Press Release 03 March 2021 at 9:00 am (CEST)

Commercial operation for Track 4A, a 1,440 MW combined cycle power plant located in Pasir Gudang, Johor Province, Malaysia was achieved on 1 January 2021 for Block 1 and 19 February 2021 for Block 2. This marked the start of the world’s first operational power plant using the new advanced GE 9HA.02 gas turbines.

Project owners are Tenaga Nasional Berhad (“TNB”) and SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd (“SIPP Energy”), who have set up a special purpose company, Southern Power Generation Sdn Bhd (“SPG”) for the project. EPC Contractor is CTCI Corporation (Taiwan) and General Electric (France).

The combined cycle power plant consists of two (2) blocks of single shaft power train with a net total generating capacity of 1440MW at reference site conditions. Each block consists of one (1) gas turbine of GE 9HA.02 type with natural gas as the main fuel and distillate as the back-up fuel, one (1) generator of a water/hydrogen cooled design, one (1) horizontal triple pressure heat recovery steam generator with reheat and once through design for outdoor installation and one (1) steam turbine of a three – casing, 3pressure reheat, condensing type comprising of a single-flow HP turbine, single flow IP turbine and a double-flow LP turbine, including all associated auxiliary equipment.

AFRY's Owner’s Engineer assignment has included assistance in project management, design review, site supervision services, quality assurance and quality control, commissioning supervision services and continues now with the services during warranty period. AFRY has been assisted in the assignment by its local partner, Minconsult Sdn Bhd.

“We want to extend big congratulations to our client SPG on this great achievement! AFRY has been honoured to work on this important project, which is an essential part of Malaysia’s power development plan, needed to ensure reliable electricity supply for Malaysia’s growing economy over the next two decades. This is also the first operational power plant project globally using the new advanced GE 9HA.02 gas turbines, allowing very high power generation efficiency and showing AFRY’s good experience in the most efficient power plant technologies” says Petteri Härkki, Regional Director of AFRY.
