AFRY and CCRM Nordic are building an ATMP facility of the future

CCRM Nordic – groundbreaking investment in advanced therapy medicinal products

AFRY has been trusted as the engineering partner and project manager for the construction of CCRM Nordic's new state-of-the-art facility in GoCo Health Innovation City, located in Mölndal. This facility is a key component of Sweden's national strategy to promote innovation and sustainable development in the pharmaceutical sector. Construction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026, with production to begin in 2027.

"AFRY has the skilled people and also the dedication that really aligns with our goals."

— Fredrik Wessberg, CEO at CCRM Nordic

CCRM Nordic’s new facility is a vital part of the Swedish government’s vision to develop and commercialise sustainable solutions to improve patient care. The facility will enable the production of ATMPs (Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products) in a GMP-compliant environment, which is critical to meeting future pharmaceutical manufacturing requirements.

AFRY supports the development of advanced therapy medicinal products

AFRY is the engineering partner for the project, bringing specialist expertise in design, construction, installation, and validation to ensure the facility meets the highest standards for pharmaceutical production and fulfills future industry needs. The project includes GMP-compliant production facilities, PD-laboratories (Process Development Laboratories) where manufacturing processes are developed and optimised, QC-laboratories (Quality Control Laboratories) ensuring that products meet quality and safety standards, as well as storage and office spaces. This also involves support in the qualification of ATMP production according to current GMP standards.

“We are delighted to be the engineering partner for CCRM Nordic’s new facility. By supporting the development of advanced therapy medicinal products, we contribute to accelerating the transition toward a more sustainable future and enhancing patient care”, Jessica Stenberg, Head of Food and Life Science.

One of the most prominent features of the new facility is its flexible design, which allows to produce different types of ATMPs to meet future pharmaceutical manufacturing demands. By offering flexible manufacturing and support to other industry players, the facility will become a crucial resource for developing and delivering modern treatment solutions.

Fredrik Wessberg, CEO of CCRM Nordic, emphasises the importance of the collaboration with AFRY in this advancement:

“This collaboration with AFRY is a significant investment for us and a milestone in the development of ATMPs. AFRY has demonstrated the expertise required in design, project management, and cGMP, giving us confidence that the facility will not only meet today’s standards but also fulfill future needs in pharmaceutical manufacturing.”

What are ATMPs?

Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products, or ATMPs, are a category of innovative drugs based on genes, cells, and tissues. These products are particularly groundbreaking due to their potential to offer entirely new treatments for severe and previously untreatable diseases, such as certain genetic disorders, cancers, and degenerative conditions.

Examples of ATMPs include CAR-T therapies, which are used to combat complex cancers like B-cell lymphoma and multiple myeloma. These treatments have already provided new hope to patients who previously lacked effective options. To date, six CAR-T therapies have been approved in Europe, reflecting the growing recognition of the importance and potential of these treatments.
