AFRY is preparing the construction of the century – the Vltava Philharmonic in Prague

From the role of general designer, we help create an architectural gem

A significant step for the culture and architecture of the capital city: AFRY, in collaboration with the renowned Danish studio BIG, will revitalize Prague’s Holešovice by creating a new national cultural center. The Vltava Philharmonic, with several concert halls, will become a new symbol of Czech music and an innovative public space for culture as a whole.

AFRY, acting as the general designer and local architect, is working with the Danish architectural studio Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) on the preparation of the Vltava Philharmonic. The new national cultural center will open not only to lovers of classical music but to all citizens and visitors of Prague. A network of public spaces, terraces, and colonnades connecting the Vltava riverbank with the Philharmonic building will allow free movement and public access.

Thanks to cooperation with BIG, one of the world’s leading architectural studios, we are bringing to Prague not only exceptional architecture but also a new approach to public space. The modernization of a neglected part of Holešovice includes comprehensive transport solutions and the development of the Bubny-Zátory brownfield into a climate-neutral district.

The Vltava Philharmonic project includes the construction of three music halls and several rehearsal rooms, with the main hall designed for 1,800 spectators. The acoustic design, provided by the world-renowned Nagata Acoustics studio, promises sound of the highest quality. The Vltava Philharmonic building will be home to the Czech Philharmonic and the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK, and will provide facilities for educational programs and public events.

Publicly accessible spaces of the Philharmonic, including rooftop terraces and colonnades, will offer new opportunities for meeting and recreation. The architectural design, inspired by the meanders of the Vltava River, reflects the natural beauty of the Czech Republic and will allow Prague residents and visitors to enjoy views of historical landmarks from a new perspective.

Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion expected in 2032. Thanks to previous participation in the architectural competition for the Philharmonic project in cooperation with Snøhetta, AFRY brings deep understanding and its vision for the future construction of the century.
