AFRY is the technical partner for Neoen's battery storage project in Sweden

Neoen, one of the world's leading producers of renewable energy, is building the Isbillen Power Reserve in Sollefteå, Sweden. With a capacity of 93.9 MW/93.9 MWh, it will be the largest battery storage facility in the Nordic region.

AFRY has been appointed as the Owner's Engineer for the project, which is planned to be fully operational in 2025 and will strengthen the Swedish electricity system and improve the security and reliability of the electricity grid.

Impact of the Isbillen power reserve project

Isbillen Power Reserve is Neoen's second battery project in Sweden and its fourth currently under construction in the country. The lithium-ion battery system will supply Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR) to Svenska Kraftnät, Sweden’s Transmission System Operator (TSO), helping to balance electricity supply and demand in real time.

Beyond improving the security of the power system, the project will:

• reduce the cost of grid stabilization
• enable greater integration of renewable energy sources
• support decarbonization goals in the Nordic region.
