Delivering innovation in evaporation technology for Biotage

As a global leader in separation technologies, Biotage partnered with AFRY to develop the TurboVap® 96 Dual, an automated and flexible evaporation system designed to meet the evolving needs of laboratories worldwide.

Why was the project initiated?

Biotage’s goal was clear – enhance the efficiency and performance of solvent evaporation processes in laboratories. Their existing system, the SPE Dry, lacked automated control and fine-tuning for gas flow and temperature, not meeting all the requirements in modern workflows.

With a challenge in the growing demand for a new and innovative system, Biotage turned to AFRY to modernise its evaporation technology while ensuring exceptional usability and performance.

The Challenge: Creating a new evaporation system

Biotage and AFRY aimed to create an entirely new evaporation system: TurboVap® 96 Dual. This next-generation solution was designed to provide individual control for dual microplates and automated method settings for temperature, gas flow, and timing. The product needed to adhere to a modern design language consistent with Biotage’s existing TurboVap® line while achieving outstanding system performance.

AFRY’s Contribution – from concept to production

AFRY stepped into the project early as a development partner during the entire process, from concept to production. The collaboration began with in-depth workshops involving Biotage’s marketing team to identify user needs, draft user stories, and refine system requirements. AFRY’s contributions included:

  • Project Management: Facilitating project progress through structured planning and clear scope definition, ensuring all team efforts were aligned.
  • Systems Engineering: Breaking down user and system requirements into actionable design inputs, with early performance testing to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Mechanical Design: Developing innovative concepts for components like top-and-bottom heaters, enabling superior evaporation performance.
  • Prototyping and Testing: Building multiple prototypes to evaluate functionality, usability, and cost-effectiveness early in the process.
  • Validation and Verification: Establishing automated testing protocols to ensure compliance with Biotage’s high standards for quality and performance.

The Result

The TurboVap® 96 Dual exceeded all expectations. Developed on time and within budget, the system introduced groundbreaking functionalities, including enhanced evaporation precision, modular design, and an intuitive user interface. Users can now control compartments individually, allowing both manual and method-driven operations that fit seamlessly into laboratory workflows.

Sustainability at the core

The product also achieved Biotage’s sustainability goals. AFRY’s innovative recirculated heating solution significantly reduced nitrogen gas consumption, while the enclosed design safely captures solvent fumes, protecting both users and the environment.

The TurboVap® 96 Dual has been a resounding commercial success, strengthening Biotage’s position as a leader in sample preparation.
