Designing the next generation of autonomous transport solutions for MIKA

From vision to reality: MIKA and AFRY’s innovative partnership driving the future of logistics

MIKA, a Swedish innovation company, specialises in Transport as a Service (TaaS). Their electric, autonomous transport solutions aim to reduce costs, address driver shortages, and promote sustainable practices. To bring their ambitious vision to life, MIKA partnered with AFRY to design and develop a groundbreaking new product for the logistics industry.

The challenge

Logistics presents multifaceted and complex challenges. Traditional solutions often mean idling trucks, half-empty loads, and an outsized carbon footprint. MIKA wanted to disrupt this pattern with a transport system that was not just efficient, but sustainably innovative. They needed a partner who not only understood technical complexity, but also shared a commitment to reducing inefficiencies and building a cleaner future.

MIKA’s flagship solution, Rolling Jenny, embodies the future of goods transport with a focus on automation, usability, and efficiency. This autonomous vehicle is part of an integrated TaaS platform, including fleet management software and systems designed to optimise logistics processes. MIKA sought to ensure the product would be cost-effective, user-friendly, and above all, sustainable.

The collaboration

MIKA Innovation approached AFRY for their reputation on delivering high-end design work. We have had a tight collaboration where AFRY has been innovative, open-minded, and driven in their design process, showing us the way to create a groundbreaking transport solution for the future.

The partnership had one clear goal: to redefine autonomous transportation. That meant creating a solution that would reduce operational costs, minimise environmental impact, and offer seamless functionality. By eliminating the need for a driver and designing a lighter, simpler vehicle, AFRY and MIKA aimed to achieve maximum efficiency and sustainability.

For Rolling Jenny’s product design, AFRY focused on creating a solution that was practical, efficient, and forward-thinking. The design team emphasised a modular framework, where critical sensors and lights could be easily upgraded or repositioned to adapt to future demands. Recognising the absence of a driver, AFRY designed lights to communicate the solution's presence effectively. Additionally, significant effort was made to enhance the charging interface, ensuring it was clear, intuitive, and user-friendly.

Overcoming challenges

One of the key challenges was balancing innovation with practicality. The design needed to reflect MIKA’s futuristic vision while remaining grounded in real-world applications. By leveraging AFRY’s extensive experience in industrial design, the team delivered a solution that exceeded expectations in both form and function.

The results

The Rolling Jenny design reduces asset costs by 50% and operational resource costs by 40-60%. One autonomous vehicle can replace two conventional vehicles over a 24-hour period, thanks to its around-the-clock functionality. Designed for repetitive, high-capacity routes, the vehicle is optimised for efficiency, with an eye towards future possibilities on public roads.

Delivering goods day and night, Rolling Jenny epitomises the concept of “freight that never sleeps.” It minimises downtime and storage needs, while maximising productivity and sustainability. This innovative solution not only meets today’s logistical challenges, but sets the stage for the autonomous future.

Sustainability and making the future

By prioritising electric, driverless technologies, Rolling Jenny contributes significantly to MIKA’s sustainability goals. Lower energy consumption, reduced materials usage, and consistent productivity help reduce the environmental footprint. AFRY’s design philosophy ensures that the vehicle aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner, more sustainable logistics operations.

Together, AFRY and MIKA have unlocked a new chapter in autonomous transport, proving that collaboration and innovation can drive meaningful change. With Rolling Jenny leading the charge, the future of logistics is smarter, more efficient, and undeniably brighter.
