Detail engineering for BillerudKorsnäs board machine
AFRY delivered detail engineering services for all disciplines as well as field engineering for BillerudKorsnäs’s new board machine in Sweden in 2016-2019.
AFRY also performed detailed engineering for process, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumental, and automation design for the modernization of the fibre and bale-dissolving line, the power and recovery plant, the water and effluent plant as well as the infrastructure.
The structural engineering included also prefabricated concrete element design. The largest single delivery was the concrete element design for the entire board machine. Almost 12,000 concrete elements went to the site.
“This has been one of our biggest projects. The board machine building alone was massive in size, about 80,000 m² and almost half a kilometre long. The soil conditions were demanding and the construction was in many ways paced by excavation supports and massive piling. These also had an impact on the designing schedule, which had to be adapted to variable situations. All engineering work was done entirely by modelling,” says Janne Ranz, Vice President, Civil & Structural Engineering at AFRY.
AFRY was also involved in all the pre-project engineering phases. “Together with the client, we developed a comprehensive technical concept for the investment plan. We were one of the key suppliers in the project implementation,” says Johan Ehrnrooth, AFRY's Head of Pulp & Paper.
BillerudKorsnäs’s investment was about 5.7 billion SEK including the construction of a new board machine at the Gruvön production site and rebuilding of the existing pulp mill. The new machine is one of the most cost efficient in the world with a capacity of approximately 550,000 t/a of liquid packaging board, carton board, food service board and liner.
