Efficient pharmaceutical production line supports sustainable growth
AFRY leads the development of a new production line within the pharmaceutical industry to strengthen the customer's capacity
The new line, set to more than double the number of batches produced per week of a vital product, requires strategic upgrades to the existing facilities. The project kicked off in October 2024.
The pharmaceutical industry plays a central role in maintaining our health, and faces high demands for quality, innovative, and efficient production. To meet the regulatory requirements of health authorities and adhere to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), it is crucial that production lines are flexible, efficient, and can be adapted to meet both current and future needs. By investing in modern production solutions, companies can optimise their capacity and ensure high quality and reliability in their products, which in turn improves patient care and promotes industry innovation.
The client, a player within biological pharmaceuticals, had a need to increase its production in order to reach new capacity targets. The new production line enables expanded local manufacturing, which creates a more sustainable production process. Through a carefully performed process simulation, it can already be confirmed in the design phase that the new production line can produce more than twice as much as the client's requirements. This results in a delivery of ten thousand doses per week. The simulation has also identified process limitations, which enables optimisations that even out the consumption of detergent, water and steam, among other things.
Collaboration and expertise drive project success
In this project, AFRY has contributed expertise primarily in two areas: process and building design. This synergy requires careful coordination between the teams, which has been a decisive factor in keeping the project on track. With limited space in the production premises and regulatory requirements from health authorities and GMP, effective cooperation is essential.
"We've had a really fun project with its challenges and tight design spaces. The collaboration between the teams has been very positive. With a professional approach and a common endeavour, together we have navigated through the specific requirements of pharmaceutical production, and we are very satisfied with the outcome," says Mikael Robertsson, Plant Designer Lead at AFRY
In close cooperation with the client, AFRY delivers an advanced and sustainable production line, adapted for today's requirements and future growth. This investment will in time strengthen the client's competitiveness and efficiency in the market.
