Ensuring successful delivery of a major railway expansion, ÖBB Infrastruktur AG, Austria

Supporting the safe and efficient execution of complex rail infrastructure works

As part of the four-track expansion of Austria's West Line between Marchtrenk and Wels, ÖBB Infrastruktur AG required comprehensive construction supervision and project coordination services to support delivery across multiple construction lots. AFRY provided on-site supervision, quality assurance, cost and schedule monitoring, safety coordination and stakeholder management, helping to ensure the efficient execution of this strategically important railway project.

Coordinating complex infrastructure works in a live rail environment

The expansion of the West Line is designed to increase railway capacity and improve connectivity on one of Austria's most important transport corridors. The project includes extensive railway, bridge, civil and terminal infrastructure works delivered in an active operational environment.

To support successful project delivery, AFRY provided construction supervision and project management services across several construction lots. Our specialists coordinated construction activities, monitored quality, managed documentation, followed up schedules and costs, supported safety management and facilitated communication between project stakeholders.

One of the project milestones was the successful installation of a new railway bridge over the A25 motorway. The complexity of the bridge works highlighted the importance of close coordination, effective site management and robust quality and safety processes throughout project execution.

Through a strong on-site presence and proactive project support, AFRY helped ÖBB manage complex interfaces, maintain project oversight and advance construction activities across the programme, contributing to the successful delivery of critical rail infrastructure.

Did you know?

The new railway bridge over the A25 weighs around 3,500 tonnes in its final state, comparable to approximately 2,000 elephants. During the bridge launch, around 1,800 tonnes were moved into position using specialized sliding technology.

Projects like the four-track expansion of the West Line show how complex infrastructure delivery requires close coordination, technical understanding and a strong focus on safety, quality and continuity. We are proud to support ÖBB Infrastruktur AG in strengthening a railway corridor that is central to passenger and freight transport in Austria and beyond.
