Finland’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) – Paistinkulma project by AFRY

Strengthening Finland’s evolving renewable energy infrastructure

Paistinkulma Energy Storage is set to become one of the largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) operating in Finland’s frequency reserve market.

Taaleri Energia, a Finnish-based wind and solar energy developer and fund manager, has launched its first BESS investment in Lempäälä, Finland. With an installed capacity of 30 MW / 36 MWh, the project marks a major milestone and will play a vital role in strengthening Finland’s evolving renewable energy infrastructure.

Designed to store and release energy with high efficiency, the system will significantly contribute to grid stability. The project was delivered on a turnkey basis by Merus Power and has been fully operational since December 2024.

The facility is also designed for future scalability, with the potential to double its current capacity, reinforcing its long-term impact and viability.

Connected to the national grid, the BESS will participate in Fingrid’s reserve market, supporting the balancing of electricity production and consumption. This is increasingly important with the growing share of intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. By enhancing grid stability, the system will improve the reliability of electricity supply and support the efficiency of the energy network.

The Paistinkulma energy storage marks the first investment of the Taaleri Solarwind III fund and is also our first project utilising this technology, making it highly significant. For the successful execution of the project, we sought support from an owner’s engineering service provider with prior experience in energy storage and multidisciplinary expertise in both construction and supervision. Carelin’s, now AFRY’s work as the owner’s engineer and their cooperation with all parties involved in the construction project has been exceptionally smooth and exemplary.

– Tuomas Kupila, Asset Manager at Taaleri Energia.

AFRY provided Owner’s Engineering services for Taaleri, encompassing project management, civil and electrical supervision, and safety coordination during the construction phase. At the time, this was also the largest BESS project in Carelin’s (now AFRY’s) portfolio, offering valuable insight into delivering complex energy storage projects at scale.
