Major new-build project for the Air Defence Regiment in Sweden
Fortifikationsverket in Sweden appointed AFRY as lead design consultant for a new facility with training premises and exercise areas for the Air Defence Regiment (Lv 6) in Halmstad. The project is security classified and supports the Swedish Armed Forces’ planned growth.
In 2018, the Swedish Armed Forces decided to procure Air Defence System 103 (Patriot). Fortifikationsverket was responsible for delivering new premises for training and storage of the system at Lv 6 in Halmstad. The investment was estimated at up to SEK 1.3 billion.
Security-classified project
As lead design consultant, AFRY was responsible for the design of this security-classified assignment for Fortifikationsverket. The main building spans approximately 20,000 square metres in a single volume and includes training halls, an equipment maintenance hall, specialist rooms for theory and simulator training, classrooms, an assembly hall, offices, changing rooms and technical rooms. The surrounding works include marshalling areas, roads and perimeter fencing with gates. The project also comprises smaller detached technical buildings, a driver-training area and a combat-techniques training area.
Thoughtful material choices
Design and interior planning have focused on well-considered material choices that support the operation. Ambitions for spatial quality and colour were set high to create attractive environments for staff and visitors—even in rooms with extensive technical requirements. Environmental and sustainability aspects have been integrated throughout, including designing the building in line with Miljöbyggnad Silver where applicable.
Multiple technical disciplines
AFRY’s role as lead design consultant resulted in detailed design documentation across a broad range of technical disciplines, coordinated from a holistic perspective. The client’s and end user’s requirements guided every stage of the design process. Continuous dialogue between all parties was key throughout - supported by AFRY’s local presence in Halmstad.
Ingvar Liinanki, Project Manager, Fortifikationsverket:
It is a very large project with specialised installations that require expert competence and strong coordination. It took AFRY a little time to get up to speed, but we are very satisfied with the end result.
