Strengthening rail capacity in the Berlin-Brandenburg region in Germany
AFRY supports planning and engineering within the i2030 program, focusing on capacity and reliability across key rail corridors.
The Berlin rail network is reaching its limits due to increasing commuter numbers, with trains operating at very high occupancy during peak times. To address this, the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg, together with Deutsche Bahn and the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB), initiated the long-term i2030 project. The objective is clear: to expand capacity, reactivate routes, reduce delays and create a robust transport system for the capital region.
AFRY's teams contribute their planning and engineering expertise to develop innovative solutions for local, long-distance, and freight transport. The goal is to significantly improve daily mobility for millions of commuters between Berlin and Brandenburg and to create a future-proof, sustainable transport system.
Strategic corridors for tomorrow’s transport
The i2030 project focuses on the most critical sections of the network. It includes multi-track lines and new or modernized stations, enabling new connections, shorter intervals, better interchange options and higher reliability for both passenger and freight traffic.
The Berlin rail system has evolved over nearly two centuries
Since 1838, when the Potsdam railway was opened, the network has continuously developed. Today, more than 1.4 million people use the S-Bahn daily. Through the comprehensive i2030 infrastructure program, the capital region is significantly investing in transport infrastructure for the future.
