Increased production with decreased CO2 emissions - The paper and board mill with modern technology - Smurfit Kappa Hoya mill, Germany

A comprehensive investment to increase production speed and produce lightweight paper in a particularly efficient and sustainable way

AFRY is proud to support the paper and board mill in Hoya in the implementation of this important project and continuing co-operation started in the first rebuild step.

Increased production with decreased CO2 emissions

The new investment is part of a comprehensive investment program launched in 2011. In addition to increasing production output by 70kt (from 380kt to 450kt per year), the CO2 emissions of the production plant will be reduced by 5,500 tons per year.

The investment will replace the entire press section of the PM2 with new, state-of-the-art technology that will significantly increase the overall efficiency of the manufacturing process. The PM2 is a 7.5-meter wide paper machine that produces both testliner and corrugating medium. After the rebuild, production speed will be 1,250 m/min, with the potential for further speed and volume increases in the coming years. Thus, the PM2 is considered Smurfit Kappa's new high-performance machine. Rebuild and commissioning are scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.

This investment is the latest and most significant step in the program of sustainable investment in our Hoya mill that began over a decade ago. It underlines Smurfit Kappa's ongoing commitment to the use of leading-edge technologies and our operations in Germany.

Saverio Mayer, CEO, Smurfit Kappa Europe

With this investment, PM2 will become a state-of-the-art paper machine that will enable us to meet the changing needs of our customers. It will increase production speed and produce lightweight paper in a particularly efficient and sustainable way. We are pleased to have AFRY as a trustworthy partner, with whom we have been working successfully for a long time, on our side for this important project.
