Kutehr Hydroelectric Project, Himachal Pradesh, India
Adding 240 MW of Clean Power to India’s Grid
AFRY served as the Principal Design & Engineering Consultant, providing detailed design engineering for civil works and reviewing hydraulic steel structures and electro-mechanical designs. The assignment was for the greenfield run-of-river Kutehr Hydroelectric Project, a 240 MW facility on the Ravi River in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India. The project was successfully commissioned in August 2025 and is now in commercial operation.
As one of the JSW Energy (Kutehr) Limited’s landmark renewable projects, Kutehr HEP aims to harness the Ravi basin’s potential while meeting demanding technical, environmental, and constructability requirements in a remote, mountainous terrain. The Hydro Power Plant is generating 240 MW to support reliable, clean power for northern India.
Powering Progress with Innovative Hydropower Solutions
This project showcases cutting-edge engineering to harness renewable energy efficiently. It features automatic gated barrage, efficient intake systems, and state-of-the-art underground facilities. A 14.6 km headrace tunnel and surge shaft ensure optimal water flow, feeding an underground powerhouse equipped with three high-performance Francis turbines, delivering a total capacity of 240 MW. The design incorporates robust infrastructure for energy transmission, ensuring a reliable and renewable power supply for the future.
AFRY’s Role
AFRY was appointed in 2019 as Principal Design & Engineering Consultant to provide end-to-end technical support for the project, including;
- Detailed design engineering of Civil work, including construction drawings for all permanent components.
- Review & approval of design & drawings submitted by vendors of Hydraulic Steel works & Electromechanical works.
- 3D Finite element numerical modelling for tunnels & U/G caverns, barrage & other concrete structures.
- Reservoir & water conductor filling, design assistance during construction; Review manuals for civil & Hydraulic steel works.
By generating clean, renewable energy, we are building a brighter and greener future for our community. This is a moment of immense pride for everyone involved in this landmark achievement. This milestone represents a powerful step forward in our commitment to sustainable energy.
