Engineering services for mine deepening to secure long‑term iron ore supply
LKAB is deepening the Vitåfors mine from the 1,200‑metre level to approximately 1,700 metres to secure long‑term iron ore supply and maintain production capacity. The transformation includes major upgrades to the mine and hoisting systems to support continued extraction of high‑quality iron ore.
AFRY supported LKAB with a broad range of engineering and project services for the mine deepening initiative. The scope covered process electrification, ICT and automation, instrumentation, and building electrification. AFRY also contributed rock mechanics and rock engineering expertise, ensuring safe and efficient deep-level mining conditions.
In addition to technical engineering, AFRY provided procurement support, project management, and project control services to guide the expansion from planning through execution. These combined efforts enabled LKAB to modernize critical systems and prepare the mine for deeper, long-term operations.
The expansion allows LKAB to maintain part of its current iron ore production capacity of approximately 80 Mt per year. By deepening the mine and upgrading essential infrastructure, LKAB strengthens operational continuity and secures long-term access to high-grade iron ore resources.
