Metsä Board Husum invests for the future

Metsä Board plans for the future at their Husum mill with a EUR billion investment targeted towards the aim of being carbon neutral by 2030. AFRY contributes to this journey by providing design and engineering services.

Metsä Board’s desired investment, which includes a new recovery boiler and a new turbine at their mill in Husum, is of great importance to the Metsä Group and the industry’s growing challenges regarding sustainable solutions for the future.

With the planned investment, Husum mill’s own electricity production based on renewable biomass will be doubled and the mill will be able to produce 80 percent of the electricity needed to operate the plant. Furthermore, the use of fossil fuels will decrease significantly, which is an important step towards fossil-free production. Currently, Metsä Board is waiting for the approval of the change application for the current environmental permit.

Global and local presence

"We are very happy and proud to be involved in such an important investment in the process industry in the Husum region, while at the same time seeing the value of being a global company in combination with our local presence", says Lisa Vedin, Business Unit Manager of AFRY’s Process Industries Division in Sweden.

AFRY - an important partner

In large projects such as these, a reliable partner with broad competence, experience and the strength is required. We believe that AFRY has the capacity required, both locally and globally. At the same time, we value AFRY as a partner based on previous collaborations we have had over the years, says Olov Winblad von Walter, Metsä Board’s Site Manager at Husum.

“Metsä Board’s desired investment creates conditions for the future. AFRY focuses heavily on helping our customers to develop in technology, sustainability and digitalisation, which makes it extra gratifying to contribute with our skills regarding Metsä Board’s future investments,” says Anders Eriksson, Project Manager at AFRY.

Engineers involved from both Finland and Sweden

AFRY was also involved in the feasibility study and preliminary project for Metsä Board’s investment plan regarding the operations in Husum. Today, AFRY contributes to the project with engineers from both Finland and Sweden.
