Owner's Engineer for state-of-the-art CCGT technology, Track 4A, Malaysia
The world’s first 9HA.02 gas turbine combined cycle power plant in operation
Commercial operation for Track 4A, a 1,440 MW combined cycle power plant located in Pasir Gudang, Johor Province, Malaysia was achieved on January 1st, 2021 for Block 1 and February 19th, 2021 for Block 2. This marked the start of the world’s first operational power plant using the new advanced GE 9HA.02 gas turbines.
AFRY as trusted engineering partner for the “Power Plant of the Year 2021”
AFRY was engaged as Owner’s Engineer for the project by SPG in 2017 to provide assistance in project management, design review, site supervision services, quality assurance and quality control, commissioning supervision services, and continues with the services during the warranty period. AFRY was assisted in the assignment by its local partner, Minconsult Sdn Bhd.
Project owners, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (“TNB”) and SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd (“SIPP Energy”), set up a special purpose company, Southern Power Generation Sdn Bhd (“SPG”) for the project. The EPC Contractor is CTCI Corporation (Taiwan) and General Electric (France).
The combined cycle power plant consists of two blocks of single shaft power train with a net total generating capacity of 1440 MW at reference site conditions. Each block consists of one gas turbine of GE 9HA.02 type with natural gas as the main fuel and distillate as the back-up fuel, one generator of a water/hydrogen cooled design, one horizontal triple pressure heat recovery steam generator with reheat and once through design for outdoor installation and one steam turbine of a three-casing, three pressure reheat, condensing type comprising of a single-flow HP turbine, single flow IP turbine and a double-flow LP turbine, including all associated auxiliary equipment.
Track 4A provides the country with reliable and flexible electricity generation and stabilizes the national grid.
The Malaysian Government has set ambitious targets for the country’s energy development to tackle climate change over the next two decades. Track 4A is part of a broader plan to ensure the highest efficiency of power generation and foster energy integration from renewable sources.
AFRY has been critical in ensuring that the Plant delivered to SPG complies with requirements in every aspect, especially technically. They have performed above expectations unbounded by the on-paper scope of works, implementing a hybrid approach working in a combined structure with SPG whilst maintaining complete professionalism. Of no less importance is the human interaction that AFRY personnel were able to establish, making the experience more fruitful and long lasting”, Rizal bin Nordin, Managing Director at Southern Power Generation Sdn Bhd.
