Supporting the long-term development of the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt

Advancing one of the world's largest gold mining operations

Following AngloGold Ashanti's acquisition of Centamin in 2024, the Sukari Gold Mine entered a new phase of development focused on strengthening long-term operational performance and creating additional value from one of Egypt's most important mining assets.

AFRY has supported this journey by providing project management and strategic planning services for multidisciplinary projects, helping the client optimize operations while preparing the mine for continued long-term growth.

Driving strategic investments for long-term value

As an established operation with ongoing production, Sukari required carefully coordinated development that balanced operational continuity with future expansion. At the same time, all projects needed to align with AngloGold Ashanti's global standards while complying with the mine's concession framework and local regulatory requirements.

AFRY supported the planning and execution of several strategic projects that are central to the mine's future development, including:

  • Expansion of tailings pumping capacity to support safe long-term operations.
  • Connection to the Egyptian power grid to reduce diesel consumption, operating costs and carbon emissions.
  • Implementation of a gravimetric gold recovery plant to improve overall gold recovery.
  • Development of a third dump leach facility to maintain production capacity.
  • Design and execution support for the next lift of the operational tailings storage facility.

Together, these investments strengthen operational resilience, improve resource efficiency and support the mine’s long-term production strategy.

Highlights

- Supporting the integration and development of one of the world's leading gold mining assets following its acquisition by AngloGold Ashanti.

- Contributing to the optimization of Egypt's largest modern gold mining operation through multiple strategic investment projects.

- Helping to establish a roadmap for long-term operational performance, resource efficiency and sustainable value creation.

An integrated approach from planning to execution

AFRY worked closely with AngloGold Ashanti throughout the development of the investment program, contributing across multiple stages of the project lifecycle.

The team supported strategic planning, engineering development, project controls, procurement and execution planning, while identifying opportunities to optimize project designs and improve overall project value.

By combining technical expertise with integrated project delivery, AFRY helped ensure that multiple complex projects progressed in parallel while remaining aligned with the mine's long-term operational objectives.

Supporting operational excellence

Delivering several major projects within an active mining operation required close coordination across disciplines, contractors and stakeholders, together with careful planning to minimize operational disruption.

Through structured project management, integrated planning and continuous collaboration with the client, AFRY helped establish efficient delivery processes that support both current operations and future development.

Today, the strategic investment program is progressing according to plan, creating the foundation for improved operational performance, greater resource efficiency and long-term value creation at the Sukari Gold Mine.
