Supporting sustainable mobility across the Tampere region
The Tampere Tramway is one of Finland’s most significant public transport projects, supporting sustainable urban development and meeting the mobility needs of a growing city region.
As Tampere’s population continues to grow and the urban area expands, the need for efficient, reliable and sustainable transport solutions is increasing. The tramway connects the city centre with Hervanta, Tampere University Hospital and Lentävänniemi, and will in the future extend to the Pirkkala and Linnainmaa districts. The first tramway section, which entered service in 2021, is approximately 24 kilometres long.
The Tampere Tramway project is being planned and delivered through an alliance model, with AFRY involved since the very beginning. AFRY provides a broad range of design services, including street, bridge, environmental, municipal infrastructure, geotechnical, depot and urban environment design.

Our role

In the ongoing Pirkkala–Linnainmaa Alliance, AFRY is contributing to the implementation of the new tramway extension together with the other alliance partners. The first phase includes the construction of tramway sections from Sorin Aukio to Partola and from Kauppi Campus to Ruotula, with passenger services scheduled to begin in August 2028. In the second phase, the tramway will be extended to Suuppa in Pirkkala and Linnainmaa. According to the current plans, the entire Pirkkala–Linnainmaa extension will be operational by 2032, forming a tramline of more than 13 kilometres.
The project aims to provide an efficient and attractive alternative to private car use while supporting sustainable urban development. The tramway has proven highly popular among passengers, with ridership increasing steadily since operations began. It has encouraged greater use of public transport in Tampere and strengthened the role of sustainable mobility in everyday travel.
Environmental considerations are an integral part of the tramway’s development. Throughout the planning and construction phases, various measures are implemented to support environmental sustainability and mitigate impacts, ensuring that the new infrastructure is integrated as seamlessly as possible into the surrounding urban environment.
