Energy Efficiency Audit for Process Industries
Roadmap towards best-in-class energy efficiency
AFRY’s Energy Efficiency Audit, targeted for industrial plants, is a proven approach to analyse all energy-related data, technology and systems to quantify the savings that can be achieved by optimising the energy consumption of industrial processes.
As energy prices have increased, measures to save energy have become critical for business profitability. Taking energy into better operational focus can yield surprisingly high savings.
AFRY’s Energy Efficiency Audit is carried out by highly skilled experts with in-depth process industry technology understanding and benchmarks. All relevant data, including, for example, data collection systems, management systems, organisation and main equipment are evaluated.
The Audit can also include an assessment of energy efficiency of the buildings, such as heating and lightning.
If requested, the Audit can be presented in a format compliant with Directive 2012/27/EU and its country-specific transcription.
In addition, AFRY's Water Audit for Industries can be carried out at the same time as the Energy Efficiency Audit when applicable.
The Audit provides the client (depending on the scope):
- benchmarking of operational performance and maturity of Energy Management System (EMS)
- list of optimisation items that do not require investment
- list of low-capex items (payback < 3 years)
- list of high capex items (payback > 3 years)
The Audit aims at achieving results: once the list of opportunities has been developed, an implementation roadmap with priorities is developed in a workshop together with the client. AFRY experts can also provide support in the implementation of various measures.
AFRY's comprehensive deliverables include the following:
- A long list of improvement items, with quantified opportunities for savings
- Classification of items: no capex, low capex, high capex (depending on the scope)
- Implementation roadmap with clear milestones and targets developed together with the client
- Opportunities to utilise modern digital tools and technologies
- The approach in line with ISO 50001, for clients that already have this system or wish to implement it.
AFRY can also provide assistance in the implementation phase to redesign and implement an Energy Management System (ISO 50001) and train the organisation to carry out the continuous improvement.
Empower your team - Our experts will work in collaboration with the client’s team, bringing the best ideas forward.
Quick and effective work process:
- The need for client’s own resources is minimised
- Timing for carrying out the diagnostic is 2-8 weeks, depending on the scope.
- AFRY delivers an initial data request, and data can be exchanged on the cloud
- Site visit takes 1-3 days, depending on the scope
- A half-day workshop to review the results and develop the implementation roadmap
AFRY has carried out more than 100 different types of Energy Efficiency Audits for major pulp & paper companies and also companies in other process industry sectors like chemicals, food & beverage and mining & metals industries. We always combine our process technology specialists with the energy efficiency audit team to enable the best-in-class outcome of the audit.
"At Industrie Cartarie Tronchetti, we have been working with Afry for many years at optimising our processes. Together, we have improved our site’s performance and our team’s technical capabilities. Our collaboration ranges from energy and water savings through to process optimisation and problem-solving using Six Sigma methodology."

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why focus on industrial energy efficiency?
- What is an Energy Efficiency Audit?
- Why do I need an Energy Efficiency Audit?
- How is the Audit performed?
In the industry sector, energy is used primarily for industrial processes but also for non-process-related purposes, such as building heating, cooling or lighting. The industrial sector accounts for >35% of total energy use globally, and a typical industrial plant is spending 30%-50% of its operating budget on energy (source iea.org). So it is obvious to focus on industrial energy efficiency to optimise energy usage and minimise energy loss. The purpose of improved energy efficiency is to improve energy consumption while also reducing operating costs and environmental impact.
An Energy Efficiency Audit identifies opportunities to save energy, as energy prices have increased. It helps you to optimise your energy usage patterns streamline your operations. Along with other parts of business, energy usage requires a strategy in order to succeed in a long term. An audit helps you to generate immediate savings and to plan your energy usage and stabilise it for years to come. In our Energy Efficiency Audit, AFRY’s experts help you to take control over your energy usage and reduce your carbon footprint.
In our optimisation audits, we detect on average up to 6% energy savings with no investments. Energy can be one of the priciest expenses in a production facility. With AFRY’s Energy Efficiency Audit you can lower your energy consumption while maintaining your operations. We help you to make your operations sustainable in a long term. AFRY’s Energy Efficiency Audit is carried out by highly skilled experts with in-depth process industry technology understanding and benchmarks. We empower your team, bringing the best ideas forward.
AFRY’s Energy Efficiency Audit is a quick and effective work process. Before the diagnostic, AFRY delivers an initial data request and data can also be exchanged on cloud. Depending on the scope, timing for carrying out the diagnostic is 2-8 weeks, during which the need for client’s resources is minimised. During audit, there are also site visits, which take approximately 1-3 days. To review and develop the implementation roadmap, an Energy Efficiency Audit includes a half-day workshop together with the client. If requested, the audit can be presented in a format compliant with Directive 2012/27/EU, which includes new measures to promote energy efficiency.
