The global waste and recycling sector is undergoing rapid and sustained growth, and this trend is set to accelerate in the years ahead. Growth in the sector is fuelled by advances in technology, evolving regulatory frameworks, rising sustainability expectations, the shift towards a circular economy, and broader economic trends. This is all attracting significant investment and creating new opportunities across the entire value chain.
Effective waste management encompasses a comprehensive and interconnected series of processes. It begins with the generation of waste where municipal waste volumes are heavily linked to population trends, and industrial/commercial waste volumes more closely linked to economic performance. And it culminates in final treatment – recycling, energy recovery (waste-to-energy), landfill, and other methods of disposal. Along the journey critical steps such as collection, sorting, and pre-processing play an essential role in ensuring that materials are managed responsibly and efficiently.

AFRY assisted an established waste company in Europe with a strategy to enter another geographical market. The assessment included an evaluation of the best location for a site from a waste supply/demand and gate fee outlook perspective. Additionally, policies, regulations and country-specific risks were taken into account in the assessment.
AFRY delivered a well-received commercial and technical assessment for a plant, including material recycling (MRF), waste-to-energy (WtE), carbon capture and recycled fibre-based packaging material production. The assessment covered markets, technical concepts, site layouts, CAPEX estimates and financial attractiveness analysis via discounted cash flow modelling.
For a waste management company aspiring to expand its business, a pre-feasibility study for a plant recycling post-consumer plastic waste with separate sorting and washing lines was carried out. AFRY provided an overview of the technical requirements and assessed the financial profitability of the project by analysing the markets for recycled plastics, as well as establishing CAPEX and OPEX estimates.
Energy Capital Partners acquired Biffa for a total of £1.3 billion equity value. Biffa is a leading integrated waste management business in the UK providing collection, treatment, recycling and technologically-driven energy generation services. AFRY undertook commercial and technical due diligence on this major transaction.
