AFRY Climate Action

AFRY and the Exponential Roadmap Initiative work together to drive exponential climate action

Science says that we need to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels to avoid high risk of catastrophic consequences for people and the living environment. To adhere to science, we need to halve emission each decade and reach net zero by mid-century. The exponential climate action needed to achieve this stems from sharp policy, climate leadership from companies and cities, finance and technological shift and collaboration.

About the partnership

As members of the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, AFRY works together with actors across sectors and value chains all over the world to drive climate action forward. Members of the Exponential Roadmap Initiative reinforce the mutual narrative of halving emissions by 2030 and the need for exponential climate action. The Exponential Roadmap Initiative is an accredited partner of the United Nations’ Race To Zero, a global campaign to rally leadership and support from multiple stakeholders including businesses to reach net zero emissions.

About the Exponential Roadmap Initiative

The Exponential Roadmap Initiative is for innovators, transformers and disruptors taking action in line with 1.5°C, with the mission to halve emissions before 2030 through exponential climate action and solutions.

The Exponential Roadmap Initiative is an ecosystem of initiatives supporting exponential climate action in line with the 1.5°C ambition. The Ecosystem includes the Exponential Roadmap, the 1.5°C Business Playbook, 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders and the SME Climate Hub.

The members of the Exponential Roadmap Initiative are subjected to stringent criteria to be part of the initiative, and the intention is to be at the forefront of climate action driving the change in the right direction.

The Exponential Roadmap Initiative is an accredited partner of United Nations’ Race To Zero, which is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors for a healthy, resilient, zero-carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.

The 1.5°C Business Playbook – a framework for rapid decarbonisation

The 1.5°C Business Playbook, produced by leading experts and business stakeholders, provides a framework for all companies to reach net-zero emissions rapidly through the adoption of an exponential trajectory of at least halving their greenhouse gas emissions every decade to approach net-zero by 2050, and integrating climate action in their business strategy.

The Exponential Roadmap - 36 solutions with exponential scaling potential to halve emissions by 2030

Scaling of solutions comes from sharp policy, from climate leadership by companies and cities and from a finance and technology shift towards green solutions with exponential potential. The roadmap shows how we can build a stronger, more resilient and future-proof global economy and increase human prosperity and health – within the planetary boundaries.

The AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap - a roadmap for our climate action

We have developed the AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap to support and guide the company towards delivering on climate commitments, and to be transparent about our climate action. Our climate commitments are in support of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and cover how we run our operations, integrate sustainability into our design, engineering and advisory solutions and seeking out transformative, innovative assignments to accelerate the sustainability transition. The roadmap also clarifies what role employees and managers play in AFRY’s climate action, while illustrating the different challenges and opportunities we have as a company.

Addressing climate change is a long-term task requiring immediate action. This is why the AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap describes where we stand today and what actions we need to take going forward. The roadmap is to be updated as work progresses.

Applying the 1.5°C Business Playbook’s 4-pillar strategy

AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap is based on the 1.5°C Business Playbook which is a framework for rapid decarbonisation in with the 1.5°C and net-zero ambition based on 4 pillars. The target and strategy for each pillar is briefly presented below.

Pillar 1: Reduce your own emissions Arrow pointing right

Pillar 1: Reduce your own emissions

Take-off strategy for growth

  • Our sustainability strategy is our business strategy.

Halve CO2 emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2040 (base year 2019).

  • This target includes emissions stemming from business travel (scope 1) and energy consumption in offices (scope 2).
  • AFRY’s operations in Sweden has renewable electricity in all offices where it is possible to choose and is to have a fossil free vehicle fleet by 2030.

Science-based targets

  • We have set science-based targets in line with the 1.5°C ambition with the Science Based Targets initiative.

Read the AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap for more information about how we work with reducing our own emissions.

Pillar 2: Reduce your value chain emissions Arrow pointing right

Pillar 2: Reduce your value chain emissions

Take-off strategy for growth

  • Our sustainability strategy is our business strategy.

Halve CO2 emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2040 (base year 2019).

  • This target includes emissions stemming from business travel (scope 3).

Supplier engagement target

  • Our prioritised suppliers are to set climate targets in line with Carbon Law and the 1.5°C ambition.

Science-based targets

  • We have set science-based targets in line with the 1.5°C ambition with the Science Based Targets initiative.

Read the AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap for more information about how we work with reducing our value chain emissions.

Pillar 3: Integrate climate in strategy Arrow pointing right

Pillar 3: Integrate climate in strategy

Take-off strategy for growth

  • Our sustainability strategy is our business strategy. Focus on four transforming segments to lead in impact and growth.

Mission

  • Accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society.

Target

  • Increase the net positive impact through our assignments to accelerate the sustainability transition.

Sustainability Policy

  • Actively seek transformative and innovative assignments.

Read the AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap for more information about how we integrate climate in strategy.

Pillar 4: Influence climate action in society Arrow pointing right

Take-off strategy for growth

  • Our sustainability strategy is our business strategy.

Mission

  • Accelerate the transition towards a sustainable  society.

Sustainability Policy

  • Share our knowledge and expertise through investments in cooperation and partnerships. This includes participating in climate-related forums such as the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COP), being part of boards and governmental collaboration groups, communicating in social media and engagement with strategic collaborations such as Norrsken foundation, Gapminder foundation and the Exponential Roadmap Initiative.

  • We seek to act as a role model and source of inspiration to our partners and clients. As part of this, we showcase sustainable solutions through our Sustainable Stories Magazine, AFRY Insights and in our social media channels.

Read the AFRY 1.5°C Roadmap for more information about how we influence climate action in society.

Science-based targets

AFRY has set science-based targets with the Science Based Targets initiative in line with the 1.5°C ambition. This means that our emission reduction trajectory is in line with the 1.5°C ambition according to the latest climate science research.

About the Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organizations to set science-based emissions reduction targets.
